Trivia about the Bible and religion

  1. "Allah Akbar, Allah Akbar, La Allah Il Allah, La Allah Il Allah U Mohammed Rassul Allah" is heard by more people than any other sound of the human voice. This is the prayer recited by muezzins from each of the four corners of the prayer tower as Muslems all over the world face toward Mecca and kneel at sunset. It means: "God is great. There is no God but God, and Mohammed is the prophet of God."
  2. Almonds and pistachios are the only nuts mentioned in the Bible.
  3. Although not named in the New Testament, tradition names the two thieves crucified at the same time as Jesus as Dismas and Gestas.

The Hymnbook

I watched intently as my little brother was caught in the act. He sat in the corner of the living room, a pen in one hand and my father's hymnbook in the other. As my father walked into the room, my brother cowered slightly; he sensed that he had done something wrong.

From a distance, I saw that he had opened my father's brand-new book and scribbled across the length and breadth of the entire first page with a pen. Now, staring at my father fearfully, he and I both waited for his punishment.

My father picked up his prized hymnal, looked at it carefully, and then sat down without saying a word. Books were precious to him; he was a clergyman and the holder of several degrees. For him, books were knowledge, and yet, he loved his children. What he did in the next few minutes was remarkable.

Instead of punishing my brother, instead of scolding or yelling or reprimanding, he sat down, took the pen from my brother's hand and then wrote in the book himself, alongside the scribbles John had made: "John's word 1959, age two.

How many times have I looked into your beautiful face and into your warm, alert eyes looking up at me and thanked God for the one who has now scribbled in my new hymnal? You have made the book sacred as have your brothers and sister to so much of my life." Wow, I thought. This is punishment?

From time to time I take a book down - not just a cheesy paperback but a real book that I know I will have for many years to come - and I give it to one of my children to scribble or write their names in. And as I look at their artwork, I think about my father, and how he taught me about what really matters in life: people, not objects; tolerance, not judgment; love which is at the very heart of a family. I think about these things, and I smile. And I whisper, "Thank you, Dad."

Words of Life

The Widow's Offering

Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts.

But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a fraction of a penny.Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others.

They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything–all she had to live on.” (Mark 12:41-42)

Selflessness: Many good people do good things even daily. The Gospel on the "Widow's mite challenges us to "give till it hurts." If we live a selfless life of services out of love for God, then we are beginning to taste what it means to love God like Christ Our Lord.

Wisdom: Wisdom is different from intelligence. If our thinking and living conform to God's ways, that's wisdom. Intelligence may help us get what we want and earn us adulation, but it will neither bring peace nor move people to love God which wisdom can.


Blessings: God has given us abundant blessings; count them! Never,compare what we have with others and complain about it. Instead, learn to be more grateful to God. Then, share your blessings with others, andreach out to them with compassion

The Positive side of Life

Living on Earth is expensive, but it does include a free trip around the sun every year.

How long a minute is depends on what side of the bathroom door you're on.

Birthdays are good for you; the more you have, the longer you live.

Happiness comes through doors you didn't even know you left open.

Ever notice that the people who are late are often much jollier than the people who have to wait for them?

In April, Maya Angelou was interviewed by Oprah (on her show) for Dr.Angelou's74th birthday. Oprah asked her what she thought of growing older.

And, there on television, she said it was "exciting."Regarding body changes, she said there were many, occurring every day...like her breasts.They seem to be in a race to see which will reach her waist first, she said.

The audience laughed so hard they cried.Dr. Angelou also said: "I've learned that no matter what happens, or how bad it seems today, life does go on, and it will be better tomorrow.

Computer down...back to basics....reformatting time..

enough said.....my compter has given up the fight to stay alive....the constant blue screen of death (BSOD) has brought down my system's stability.....final straw was it took my internet connection away.....

that's it man...haha..going wipe everything clean and reinstall...hopefully that will solve all the problems....meanwhile......lucikly got a laptop to stay online.....thinking of it....should be a good idea also....start the new year with a refreshed system...

Remember...we are loved always.....

"The story goes that some time ago a man punished his 5-year-old daughter for wasting a roll of expensive gold wrapping paper.

Money was tight and he became even more upset when the child pasted the gold paper so as to decorate a box to put under the Christmas tree.

Nevertheless, the little girl brought the gift box to her father the next morning and said, "This is for you, Daddy." His anger flared again when he found the box was empty. He spoke to her in a harsh manner, Don't you know, young lady, when you give someone a present there's supposed to be something inside the package?"

The little girl looked up at him with tears in her eyes and said, "Oh, Daddy, it's not empty. I blew kisses into it until it was full."The father was crushed. He fell on his knees and put his arms around his little girl, and he begged her to forgive him for his unnecessary anger.

An accident took the life of the child only a short time later and it is told that the father kept that gold box by his bed for all the years of his life. And whenever he was discouraged or faceddifficult problems he would open the box and take out an imaginary kiss and remember the love of the child who had put it there.

In a very real sense, each of us as human beings have been given a golden box filled with unconditional love and kisses from our children, family, friends and God. There is no more precious possession anyone could hold.

The blond who had just opened herbook, closes it slowly and says to the guy, "What would you like to discuss?" "Oh, I don't know'. how about nuclear energy?" "OK" she says. "That could be an interesting topic, but first may I ask you a question?

A horse, a cow and a deer all eat the same stuff. Grass. Yet, the deer excretes little pellets, the cow turns out flat patties and the horse produces muffin shaped poop. Why do you suppose that is? "The guy is dumbfounded. Finally he replies, "I haven't got a clue. "So tell me" she says, "how is it you feel qualified to discuss nuclear energy when you don't know shit?"

Missionary @ work

A missionary on furlough told this true story while visiting his home church in Michigan... While serving at a small field hospital in Africa, every two weeks I traveled by bicycle through the jungle toa nearby city for supplies.

This was a journey of two days and required camping overnight at the halfway point. On one of these journeys, I arrived in the city where I planned to collect money from a bank, purchase medicine and supplies, and then begin my two-day journey back to the field hospital.

Upon arrival in the city, I observed two men fighting, one of whom had been seriously injured. I treated him for his injuries and at the same time witnessed to him of the Lord Jesus Christ. I then traveled two days, camping overnight, and arrived home without incident. Two weeks later I repeated my journey.

Upon arriving in the city, I was approached by the young man I had treated. He told me that he had known I carried money and medicines. He said, "Some friends and I followed you into the jungle, knowing you would camp overnight.

We planned to kill you and take your money and drugs. But just as we were about to move into your camp, we saw that you were surrounded by 26 armed guards."

At this I laughed and said that I was certainly all alone out in that jungle campsite. The young man pressed the point, however, and said, "No sir, I was not the only person to see the guards. My five friends also saw them, and we all counted them. It was because of those guards that we were afraid and left you alone."

At this point in the sermon, one of the men in the congregation jumped to his feet and interrupted the missionary and asked if he could tell him the exact day that this happened.

The missionary told the congregation the date and the man who interrupted told him this story: "On the night of your incident in Africa, it was morning here and I was preparing to go play golf. I was about to putt when I felt the urge to pray for you. In fact, the urging of the Lord was so strong, I called men in this church to meet with me here in the sanctuary to pray for you. Would all of those men who met with me on that day stand up?"

The men who had met together to pray that day stood up. The missionary wasn't concerned with who they were--he was too busy counting how many men he saw. There were 26.

"But let all who take refuge in you be glad;
let them ever sing for joy.
Spread your protection over them,

that those who love your name may rejoice in you.

For surely, O LORD , you bless the righteous;
you surround them with your favor as with a shield." Psalm 5:11

Christian Unity....

Greetings ....hows the saturday coming along for everyone? hope everyone had fun in a way or another...was a usual saturday for me....had chance to rest more and sleep in....woke up ard noon and started the first phase in reformatting my computer.....gona start backing up my stuffs slowly over the next few days.....my computer has started to go berserk.....blue screen of death every now and then...kinda gets on my nerve.....so gona wipe out everything clean and reinstall everything....before that....gona back up all my stuffs...

Went for mass in the evening.....and i must say..today's homily by Fr John Lau kinda touched me and i find it somehow meaningful...its was on Christian Unity as it was Christian Unity week...Fr Lau talked about the various aspect of unity in the universal church.....between the different christian groups and religion.. and of course.....unity with in a parish itself....this suprred me on into further relfections about it...

Unity in the universal Church:

Guess kinda surprised to see this? well.....its a rather sad fact that though the catholic church is universal (i.e. exists practically everywhere on this planet) with its control coming from the Vatican in Rome and the Pope being the head of the church. Human nature has stepped in and moulded the hearts of the church's children over the world to resist this unity.

It can be seen at times in various places...many acts of dis-unity can be seen. For example, churches are not following closely the teachings/instructions of the church...having to add on stuffs on their own with out authority.....Liturgical abuses whereby the Eucharistic celebration or the mass is being celebrated wrongly and its rubics(rules) not being followed faithfully.

All this and many other happenings can be seen as dis-unity in the church and it hurts the church on the whole....though you or me may not see the harm or it does not affect us directly...but the fact still stands....the harm is done....

Unity between different Christian Groups and Religion

This is really a hot topic in today's context...with the world having so much sad happenings and hurt occuring, the effects of religion on bringing comfort to the displaced and harmed ones can be seen....it can help steady a person's emotion and being back faith.....

However, some how...somewhere....some people will always have to go against the flow...attacks on various groups are made....criticisms....comparisions.....claims of who's religion being the real one and etc....some of these are done in war of words......but sadly...some go beyond just that...bombing of churches...destruction of mosques....taking away innocent lives with it just ain't the way......have we forgotten that at the end of the day....though we may have different believes or practises....we still belong to one God? There's no deny to that....you cant say that Yaweh God and Allah are different or separate Gods.....a look at the various religion's roots would have indicated that they are linked in a way.....and that way is that there is only ONE God....

We all have to learn religious tolerance.....cultural respect....and also the respect for other people's believe...

Unity with the parish

There is this saying "charity starts from home".....I would like to add one as well....unity also starts from home....in the church context...that home would be at the parish level....today....any practising catholic who goes to church often would have in a way heard stories or complains of some kind......be it about the priests or a paritcular person's character....competancy...or different church groups methods of operation....

To add the final topping to the problem.....we can see ugly acts at times.....church groups "fighting" with each other.....using war of words...spreading rumours..... and through actions like boycot of events....protests with the priests and etc....

Why are we behaving in such manner? Dont we all belong to the same family of God? let alone the same parish......

All this boils down to one point....our purpose in serving or participating in the religion...are we there.....for our own glory, fame, benefit? or are we there because there is a buring desire and zeal in our hearts to serve our God...and through our actions...serve our fellow brothers and sisters....and with this .....gain spiritual comfort and love....

really very sad to see such bad stuffs happening.....haizz......unity is really lacking...

You are ever powerful and wise beyond all wisdoms, guide us and keep our close to you.
Send your spirit upon us to guide and correct our actions; our selfish hearts, our lack of faith, our stubborness and all other faults.

Help us to see that unity is vital and we can have all the love, wisdom, perform all sorts of observances, reverence but if we are all not united, we cannot say that we belong to your church.

Public Holidays...what a nice gift....

ellozy... nothing much happening today..its Hari Raya Haji....so its a public holiday...no school...no work.....the streets are all kinda quiet...not as busy as its supposed to be...guess everyone are preparing for their weekend hiatus in the evening? or everyone are just chilling out at home...

went and play soccer today with the guys.....kinda got irritated initially....ah well.....promised to come liao...then end up never turn up.....its kinda irresponsible lor....as in....other people take the trouble to come down but end up seeing only an empty meeting place ....no calls....no sms..nothing...have to make others call you and then you just sheepishly give an excuse...haizz.....come on guys...cannot like this la.....next time must make up your mind....luckily some turn up....if not how? wait saboh only one person go down and wait like a fool..if it were you....you will be happy meh......

sad things aside......for those who turned up.....we just played some simple kick around and passing in the church compound....Aloysius, Eugene, Michael, Terence and myself just kinda entertained ourselves with the carpark sign..haha..used it as a shooting target...sorry anthony.. =p

hey hey hey...aloysius contracted a new disease today......its called SBS.....haha....to spare him some face la...not going to reveal what it means here....if you really want to know...come ask me ya..hahaha...kinda triggered our funny bones when he got the SBS and was having a reaction to it..hahaha..still cannot understand how you do that sia aloy......teach us ley =p

met up with jeremy at jp for lunch....enjoyed ourselves as usual.....meet Uncle Peter, Aunty Victoria and Brandon having their lunch and little family time ...awwww...so sweet right...haha...but Jonathan is missing...

after lunch...we went our separate ways....some of them going to town and some heading home...gona have a chill out session later in the evening at mike's place.....looks like its gona be fun..hehez....jeremy will be bringing his Xbox..wooohooooo.......

Moi Day....

helloness......its thursday today! yaay....tomorrow is a public holiday..which means..no need to go back camp...hehehz...was on half day leave today.....so left the camp early....was kinda bored about how to spent my time...oh well..i guess the sleeping fairy ruled over me.. =p

went home and had a short nap.....then went for a evening swim.....felt kinda refreshed and energised....exercise does help alot in one's health....it can really make one feel better and improve your mood...get it? everyone out there ...time to exercise..haha.....have been doing swimming lately.....due to my back problem...cant really do much running and etc.....sort of will make my back feel numb.....

ah well..anyways...had a very nice feeling while swimming in the water....just felt very carefree...can just move in the water in watever way i can and move in any direction....the normal rules of sciences just dont seem to apply fully for the moment..hehez....

pondering now what to do for the holiday tomorrow....Aloysius wants to play soccer...but until now no news ley...eh..aloy...what sia.... #@$@#^$%^$% ..... hahahahha......chill la......just hope its on ba......

De$|Re

An emperor was coming out of his palace for his morning walk
when he met a beggar. He asked the beggar, "What do you want?"


The beggar laughed and said, "You are asking me as though you
can fulfill my desire!"


The king was offended. He said, "Of course I can fulfill your
desire. What is it? Just tell me."


And the beggar said, "Think twice before you promise anything."
The beggar was no ordinary beggar, he was the emperor’s past
life master. He had promised in that life, "I will come and try
to wake you in your next life. This life you have missed but I
will come again." But the king had forgotten completely -- who
remembers past lives? So he insisted, "I will fulfill anything
you ask. I am a very powerful emperor, what can you possibly
desire that I can not give to you?"


The beggar said, "It is a very simple desire. You see this
begging bowl? Can you fill it with something?"


The emperor said, "Of course!" He called one of his viziers and
told him, "Fill this man's begging bowl with money." The vizier
went and got some money and poured it into the bowl, and it
disappeared. And he poured more and more, and the moment he
would pour it, it would disappear. And the begging bowl
remained always empty.


The whole palace gathered. By and by the rumor went throughout
the whole capital, and a huge crowd gathered. The prestige of
the emperor was at stake. He said to his viziers, "If the whole
kingdom is lost, I am ready to lose it, but I cannot be
defeated by this beggar."


Diamonds and pearls and emeralds, his treasuries were becoming
empty. The begging bowl seemed to be bottomless. Everything that
was put into it -- everything! -- Immediately disappeared, went
out of existence.


Finally it was the evening, and the people were standing there
in utter silence. The king dropped at the feet of the beggar and
admitted his defeat. He said, "Just tell me one thing. You are
victorious - but before you leave, just fulfill my curiosity.
What is the begging bowl made of?"


The beggar laughed and said, "It is made up of the human mind.
There is no secret. It is simple made up of human desire."
This understanding transforms life. Go into one desire -- what
is the mechanism of it? First there is a great excitement,
great thrill, and adventure. You feel a great kick. Something is
going to happen, you are on the verge of it. And then you have
the car, you have the yacht, you have the house, you have the
woman, and suddenly all is meaningless again.


What happens? Your mind has dematerialized it. The car is
standing in the drive, but there is no excitement anymore. The
excitement was only in getting it. You became so drunk with the
desire that you forgot your inner nothingness. Now the desire
is fulfilled, the car in the drive, the woman in your bed, the
money in your bank account - again excitement disappears. Again
the emptiness is there, ready to eat you up. Again you have to
create another desire to escape this yawning abyss.


That's how one moves from one desire to another desire. That's
how one remains a beggar. Your whole life proves it again and
again -- every desire frustrates. And when the goal is
achieved, you will need another desire.


The day you understand that desire as such is going to fail
comes the turning point in your life.


The other journey is inwards. Move inwards, come back home.
As the Year continues, are your desires enough to fill the bowl?

Jesus vs Satan

Having the Monday blues? hope this cheers you up...toujours! =)

Jesus and Satan were having an ongoing argument about who was better onhis computer. They had been going at it for days, and God was tired ofhearing all the bickering. Finally, God said, "Cool it. I am going to setup a test which will take two hours and I will judge who does the better job." So Satan and Jesus sat down at the keyboards and typed away.

They moused. They did spreadsheets. They wrote reports. They sent faxes.They sent e-mail. They sent out e-mail with attachments. They downloaded.They did some genealogy reports. They made cards. They did every known job.

But, ten minutes before the time was up, lightning suddenly flashed across the sky, thunder rolled, the rainpoured and, of course, the electricity went off. Satan stared at his blankscreen and screamed in every curse word known in the underworld.

Jesus just sighed.The electricity finally flickered back on, and each of them restarted their computers. Satan started searching frantically screaming, "It's gone!It's all gone! I lost everything when the power went out!"

Meanwhile, Jesus quietly started printing out all his files from the pasttwo hours. Satan observed this and became even more irate. "Wait! He cheated! How did he do it?"

God shrugged and said, "Jesus Saves" =p

Abdul Alzruddin felt the weight of old age upon him. One day, as he sat with his friends drinking tea, he reminisced about his past. "When I was young I was of joyful temperament," said he "My only desire at that time was to change every human being in this world. I prayed daily to Allah for strength to do this.

When I reached middle age, I looked back on my life and noticed that I had not changed anyone. Oh, my ambition was too high, I thought. Then I wanted to change only those who were very close to me. They needed a real change for the better, I thought. Once again I prayed to Allah.

As I became old, I realised that more than 2/3 of my life had already slipped by and yet, I had not changed a single human being. Now I pray: "O, Allah, if possible change me and make me according to your own wish and plan. That is the only thing I can realy do."

We human beings are always keeping a keen eye on the faults of others. Why not try looking into ours first before we attempt to look at others?

"Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?

How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.

Now....think twice before complaining...haha...

A man was sick and tired of going to work every day while his wife stayed home. He wanted her to see what he went through so he prayed: "Dear Lord: I go to work every day and put in 8 hours while my wife merely stays at home. I want her to know what I go through, so please allow her body to switch with mine for a day. Amen."

God, in his infinite wisdom, granted the man's wish. The next morning, sure enough, the man awoke as a woman. He arose, cooked breakfast for his mate, awakened the kids, set out their school clothes, fed them breakfast, packed their lunches, drove them to school, came home and picked up the dry cleaning, took it to the cleaners and stopped at the bank to make a deposit, went grocery shopping, then drove home to put away the groceries, paid the bills and balanced the cheque book. He cleaned the cat's litter box and bathed the dog.

Then it was already 1 P.M. and he hurried to make the beds, do the laundry, vacuum, dust, and sweep and mop the kitchen floor. Ran to the school to pick up the kids and got into an argument with them on the way home. Set out milk and biscuits and got the kids organized to do their homework, then set up the ironing board and watched TV while he did the ironing.

At 4:30 he began peeling potatoes and washing vegetables for salad, breaded the pork chops and snapped fresh beans for supper. After supper, he cleaned the kitchen, ran the dishwasher, folded the laundry, bathed the kids, and put them to bed.

At 9 P.M. he was exhausted and, though his daily chores weren't finished, he went to bed where he was expected to make love which he managed to get through without complaint. The next morning, he awoke and immediately knelt by the bed and said, "Lord, I don't know what I was thinking. I was so wrong to envy my wife's being able to stay home all day. Please, oh please, let us trade back."

The Lord, in his infinite wisdom, replied, "My son, I feel you have learned your lesson and I will be happy to change things back to the way they were. You'll just have to wait nine months, though. You got pregnant last night."

Weekends are here again!

whoooooohaaaaa! haha...the weekends are here again.....time to throw camp stuffs aside and relax...had only half day of work today.. hehez....camp had a cohesion function in the evening and hence my officer decided to give everyone half day off...threw smoke bomb (left camp) at 1230hrs and went home....felt kinda tired and took a nap...

oh yah......I brought all my stuffs back from camp as well....since i'm now on stay out status due to my back injury....cant really sleep in camp...hence they allowed me to go home everyday...makes no sense to keep my stuffs in camp....

woke up in the evening and went for the cohesion thingy....was kinda boring and stupid actually...just basically everyone gathering at a venue outside and eat....there wasnt any interaction between departments and people..everyone just kept to their own clique of people...except for the officers who practically know each other..welcome to the army life i guess...haha.... =p

left early since I realised there was enough time to go for mass in church...today's mass was for the intention of the tsunami disaster...though it has already past for sometime...i guess its just still ingering in people's hearts....cant blame anyone....just look at the intense suffering and damage done..anyone who as still some sense of humanity in them...will sure feel something...

just hope that through the mass....people would be healed by the power of God ...and that those who need comforted will be comforted...the dead may have peace....the alive may have love and grace...to continue the precious gift which was taken away from those unfortunate souls..

After mass...went for dinner with Jeremy....and here I am now..at his house....blogging while he's having his bath....we are going to watch a movie later at 0030hrs..."Aviator" i think...poor Jeremy..his company Stanley is away for a camp this weekend...so I'm the stand in company..haha....nah.....I guess just having someone for company is good...understand how he feels...to be alone and etc...at least no need to stare at the wall at home... =p

A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle

A few weeks ago NIMH* had conducted a sports meet for all the physically & mentally handicapped children at National Stadium Hyderabad. In one race, nine contestants, all physically or mentally disabled, assembled at the starting line for the 100-yard dash.

At the gun, they all started out, not exactly in a dash, but with a relish to run the race to the finish and win. All, that is, except one little boy who stumbled on the asphalt, tumbled over a couple of times, and began to cry. The other eight heard the boy cry. They slowed down and looked back. Then they all turned around and went back: every one of them.

One girl with Down's syndrome bent down and kissed him and said, "This will make it better." Then all nine linked arms and walked together to the finish line. Everyone in the stadium stood, and the cheering went on for several minutes.

People who were there are still telling the story. Why? Because deep down we know this one thing: What matters in this life is more than winning for ourselves. What matters in this life is helping others win, even if it means slowing down and changing our course. "

Recently I overheard a mother and daughter in their last moments together at the airport. They had announced the departure. Standing near the security gate, they hugged and the mother said "I love you and I wish you enough".

The daughter replied, "Mom, our life together has been more than enough. Your love is all I ever needed. I wish you enough, too, Mom". They kissed and the daughter left. The mother walked over to the window where I was seated. Standing there I could see she wanted and needed to cry.

I tried not to intrude on her privacy but she welcomed me in by asking "Did you ever say good-bye to someone knowing it would be forever?” "Yes, I have," I replied. "Forgive me for asking but why is this a forever goodbye?". "I am old and she lives so far away. I have challenges ahead and the reality is the next trip back will be for my funeral" she said.


"When you were saying goodbye, I heard you say 'I wish you enough'. May I ask what that means?” She began to smile. "That's a wish that has been handed down from other generations. My parents used to say it to everyone".

She paused a moment and looked up as if trying to remember it in detail and she smiled even more. "When we said 'I wish you enough' we want the other person to have a life filled with just enough good things to sustain them".Then turning toward me she shared the following as if she was reciting it from memory –


I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright.
I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun more.
I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive.
I wish you enough pain so that the smallest joys in life appear much bigger.

I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting.

She then began to cry and walked away.

"They say it takes a minute to find a special person, an hour to appreciate them, a day to love them, but then an entire life to forget them."

Babs Miller was bagging some early potatoes for me. I noticed a small boy,delicate of bone and feature, ragged but clean, hungrily apprising a basket of freshly picked green peas.

I paid for my potatoes but was also drawn to the display of fresh green peas. I am a pushover for creamed peas and new potatoes. Pondering the peas, I couldn't help overhearing the conversation between Mr. Miller and the ragged boy next to me.

"Hello Barry, how are you today?"

"Hello, Mr. Miller. Fine, thank ya. Jus' admirin' them peas . sure look good."

"They are good, Barry. How's your Ma?"

"Fine. Getting stronger all the time."

"Good. Anything I can help you with?"

"No, Sir. Jus' admirin' the peas."

"Would you like to take some home?"

"No, Sir. Got nuthin' to pay for 'em with."

"Well, what have you to trade me for some of those peas?"

"All I got's my prize marble here."

"Is that right? Let me see it."

"Here 'tis. She's a dandy."

"I can see that. Hmmmmm, only thing is this one is blue and I sort of go for red. Do you have a red one like this at home?"

"Not exactly . but almost."

"Tell you what. Take this sack of peas home with you and next trip this way let me look at that red marble."

"Sure will. Thanks Mr. Miller."

Mrs. Miller, who had been standing nearby, came over to help me. With a smile she said, "There are two other boys like him in our community, all three are in very poor circumstances. Jim just loves to bargain with them for peas, apples, tomatoes, or whatever. When they come back with their red marbles, and they always do, he decides he doesn't like red after all and he sends them home with a bag of produce for a green marble or an orange one, perhaps."

I left the stand smiling to myself, impressed with this man. A short time later I moved to Colorado but I never forgot the story of this man, the boys, and their bartering.

Several years went by, each more rapid that the previous one. Just recently I had occasion to visit some old friends in that Idaho community and while I was there learned that Mr. Miller had died. They were having his viewing that evening and knowing my friends wanted to go, I agreed to accompany them. Upon arrival at the mortuary we fell into line to meet the relatives of the deceased and to offer whatever words of comfort we could.

Ahead of us in line were three young men. One was in an army uniform and the other two wore nice haircuts, dark suits and white shirts ... all very professional looking.

They approached Mrs. Miller, standing composed and smiling by her husband's casket. Each of the young men hugged her, kissed her on the cheek, spoke briefly with her and moved on to the casket.

Her misty light blue eyes followed them as, one by one, each young man stopped briefly and placed his own warm hand over the cold pale hand in the casket. Each left the mortuary awkwardly, wiping his eyes.

Our turn came to meet Mrs. Miller. I told her who I was and mentioned the story she had told me about the marbles. With her eyes glistening, she took my hand and led me to the casket.

"Those three young men who just left were the boys I told you about.! They just told me how they appreciated the things Jim "traded" them. Now, at last, when Jim could not change his mind about color or size ... they came to pay their debt."

"We've never had a great deal of the wealth of this world," she confided, "but right now, Jim would consider himself the richest man in Idaho."

With loving gentleness she lifted the lifeless fingers of her deceased husband. Resting underneath were three exquisitely shined red marbles.

Moral:
We will not be remembered by our words, but by our kind deeds.

What a day....

What a day today! totally shagged out and tired man! Was on gate sentry duty today...spent my day at the guard house performing an hour guard and 2 hours rest program....its kinda fun and interesting especially when its my first time doing it.

However, the serenity was broken my the endless complaints made by some people after lunch. End up had to move around the camp during my rest time to attend to them....what a brain! I really wonder sometimes how do people use keys to open a door.....they can actually break it....too much energies in their channels i guess..haha...must find ways for them to expand them...

Best of all...they actually have the cheek to demand that you get the locksmith to come down on the very same day and solve the problem...hmm...considered it was already 1530hrs by then.....looks kinda big task.....however...with some pushing and "kicking" ..haah...the problems were finally solved...

Had a hair cut just now.....not exactly a very major cut...just did some trimmings here and there....looks kinda neater now.. =) Feeling very shagged now.....mind feels kinda drained and empty...not thinking anymore for the day i guess..hahaha.....

In the midst of doing my duty today.......there was a short period of time went everything just went quiet and still.....I dont whether is it the surrounding or was it just my brain shutting everything outside off.....mind just went blank and was conquered by something which was long kept dearly inside my heart.....guess it was triggered by someone whom looked familiar like her....my mind was just flooded with images of her ...its as if she was just standing in front of me....my heart felt so weird.....mind thought of nothing else but her.....haha....think my heart has been captured by her liao....haha....but i dont mind... =p

The following words kinda describes how I feel about her....composed them from the bottom of my heart....who is that her? oh well.....lets leave that as a "??" for now....hehez.. =) take care everyone!

Bob Richards, the former pole-vault champion, shares a moving story about a skinny young boy who loved football with all his heart:

Practice after practice, he eagerly gave everything he had. But, being half the size of the other boys, he got absolutely nowhere. At all the games, this hopeful athlete sat on the bench and hardly ever played. This teenager lived alone with his father, and the two of them had a very special relationship. Even though the son was always on the bench, his father was always in the stands cheering. He never missed a game.

This young man was still the smallest of the class when he entered high school. His father continued to encourage him but also made it very clear that he did not have to play football if he didn't want to. Since the young man loved football, he decided to hang in there. He was determined to try his best at every practice, with the hopes that he'd get to play when he became a senior. All through high school he never missed a practice nor a game, but he always remained a bench-warmer. His faithful father was always in the stands, always with words of encouragement for him.

When the young man went to college, he decided to try out for the football team as a "walk-in." Everyone was sure he could never make the cut, but he did. The coach admitted that he kept him on the roster because the student always put his heart and soul into every practice, and at the same time, he provided the other members with the spirit and hustle they badly needed. The news that he had survived the cut thrilled him so much that he rushed to the nearest phone and called his father. His father shared his excitement and obtained season tickets for all the college games.

This persistent young athlete never missed practice during his four years at college, but he never got to play in a game. At the end of his senior football season, as he trotted onto the practice field shortly before the big playoff game, the coach met him with a telegram. The young man read the telegram and he became deathly silent. Swallowing hard, he mumbled to the coach, "My father died this morning. Is it all right if I miss practice today?" The coach put his arm gently around his shoulder and said, "Take the rest of the week off, son. And don't even plan to come back to the game on Saturday."

Saturday arrived, and the game was not going well. In the third quarter, when the team was ten points behind, a silent young man quietly slipped into the empty locker room and put on his football gear. As he ran onto the sidelines, the coach and his players were astounded to see their faithful teammate back so soon.

"Coach, please let me play. I've just got to play today," said the young man. The coach pretended not to hear him. There was no way he wanted his worst player in this close playoff game. But the young man persisted, and finally feeling sorry for the kid, the coach gave in.

"All right," he said. "You can go in." Before long, the coach, the players and everyone in the stands could not believe their eyes. This little unknown, who had never played before, was doing everything right. The opposing team could not stop him. He ran, he passed, blocked, and tackled like a star. His team began to triumph. The score was soon tied. In the closing seconds of the game, this kid intercepted a pass and ran all the way for the winning touchdown.

The fans broke loose. His teammates hoisted him onto their shoulders. Such cheering you never heard. Finally, after the stands had emptied and the team had showered and left the locker room, the coach noticed that this young man was sitting quietly in the corner all alone.
The coach came to him and said, "Kid, I can't believe it. You were fantastic! Tell me what got into you? How did you do it?"

He looked at the coach, with tears in his eyes, and said, "Well, you knew my dad died, but did you know that my dad was blind?" The young man swallowed hard and forced a smile, "Dad came to all my games, but today was the first time he could see me play, and I wanted to show him I could do it!"

All of us are blind in some way. But when we die, any blindness we've had is healed. As you think of the separation you feel between you and your loved ones who have passed on, remind yourself that now they are seeing you better, loving you more, and embracing the Spirit of God fully. They are giving you, really giving you, much more than they could while on earth. And it's coming to you through the Holy Spirit. Open yourself more to Him and you'll open the door of love that keeps you always connected to those who love you.

My Day....

Woke at to the nice and calm tune of my handphone alarm...it was playing the theme song from the movie "Forest Gump"......really a very nice tune...it can send one into thinking land and spurr out all your thoughts.....placed it as my blog song for now..hope it can lead you guys into some nices thoughts.. =)

It always good to close your eyes and reflect upong your life once in a while...I guess..it can help us relive some nice memories...archive the unhappy ones...and get ourselves reorgainsed again..feeling better and refreshed...but then...dont forget to continue reading my blog of that la! haha...

kinda dragged myself out of bed today.....dont know why....didnt feel like waking up today actually.....wasnt in the best of moods.....i guess am troubled by some matters....nevertheless...the Lord's calling had a greater effect..haha....woke up and went to church...

Served the 9am and 1030am mass......during the mass....many thoughts ran through my head...not to say that i wasnt paying attention...but then....i would say..its one of the effects which mass can give you ...and that is to help you refect on your life or certain issues....today's topic was on the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. Its basically about Jesus being baptised in the river Jordan by John the Baptist....more details can be found in one of my posts... =)

The discussion about this feast day during the masses actually reminded me of my baptism....what was expected of it and etc. Whether we are infant baptised..or baptised later on in life, we are received into God's family for nothing.....not to say that we have to pay for it or what...but through the gift of being able to be called God's children....we are duty bound to let by our baptismal values....to spread the good news....to live a christian life under the influence and guidance of God...we must always bear in mind that we belong to God....and He is always there for us....but how many a times...especially in today's world...have we forgotten him....let alone the simple values that we are called to live by....its not as if now we are asked to be Saints ...or sinless people.....

Well.....after church...went for lunch with the guys and then had a meeting....many issues were raised and ironed...shall not go into details here....its kinda happy to see that the younger servers are learning and preparing to take over the helm....I pray that God will be with them and keep them faithful and steadfast so that one day..they can take over the Altar Servers and continue serving him....I have been a server for almost 12 years....have seen many of them grow up before my eyes....well....we cant be holding on forever....we have to teach and motivate and guide the next generation...its the cycle of life I guess....

However, a personal observation made was that some of the younger guys were actually very happy that the older guys like me...are not holding any more positions and are appearing to be silent in the Ministry....as if we have no say....oh well.....my advise can only be this....we may appear silent..but that doesnt mean we are not doing anything...there are many things which are done...which are unknown to many people....i guess...theres just not a need to "advertise" about it.....in addition...if one think that they can just cast the older guys aside, hack care them and worse still...show them disrespect....well.....you're wrong..haha....

no matter what....we are always more experience than you...thats a fact....you are only given a chance to play a more proactive role...not to abuse it....respect would be the keyword at the end of the day.... just as we showed you the respect by the basis that we gave you the chance to be proactive..."one who shows respect for his seniors will in turn earn the respect of his peers" sounds old fashioned? Ah well....I was brought up and trained during my younger days as a server based on that principle and I find it meaningful and applicable....be it to seniors..your parents..or elders....besides....it is something that is also taught by God... :)

I am not trying to hint at anyone or targetting anyone...hope no offence is taken...just airing out my observation/views...at the end of the day..everyone has a role to play..and I pray that everyone will do it well.....in the end..we are all working for the Glory of GOD!!

After meeting....few of us went down to Ikea to get some stuffs...its a new year...so new things must come in..haha...nice excuse to spend $$... =p Jeremy, Aloysius, Michael, Clement, Eugene , Terence and myself formed the excursion party...had quite alot of fun shopping together...bought some stuffs for a new servers notice board...

After that....took bus 198 home and each of us went our seperate ways...back to our own families....it was a nice day for me....I've enjoyed their company....hope they had fun too... =)

Made an order online at amazon for some liturgy books...there goes my $$ again..ahah...shall talk about it more soon....gona prepare for bed....having a course at Khatib camp tomorrow...got to reville early....bye!

Jeremy - Duno if you are gona read this..but nevertheless....all the best as President for 2005...you can do a good job...just remember...goto to stay focused and determined....do well for your studies as well.... A level year ah....ahha... =)

Clement - Dont be so cheapskate and take Ikea's pencils la.....small pencils also you want...tsk tsk tsk.....must leave some for other people mah....you take so much...wanna eat them izzit..haha...have a good week ahead....

Eugene - Enjoy your trip to KL this coming week...take good care of yourself....being in a foreign land is fun...but dont let that fun be dashed by a moment's carelessness or folly....must get something for us ah...haha...

Terence - enjoy your IT courses in the coming week..learn as much as you can...it will definitely help you in your future studies....most importantly for now...Have FUN!! =)
