The Word:

The Lord calls in silence. In a world of peace, God’s word comes like the descent of a quiet, velvet night. There is no special way to speak to God, no particular way that says everything. What a marvelous experience, to be in the presences of God—and what is adequate is silence.

“Pointing Others to Jesus”:

In today’s Gospel, John the Baptist preached the need for repentance, so that the people’s hearts would be more receptive to Jesus’ Good News of Salvation. How much of what we do and say point people towards Jesus and His Good News?

===================================================================

Let us not esteem worldly prosperity or adversity as things real or of any moment, but let us live elsewhere, and raise all our attention to Heaven; esteeming sin as the only true evil, and nothing truly good but virtue which unites us to God.

- Saint Gregory Nazianzen (330-390)

The bread which you do not use is the bread of the hungry; the garment hanging in your wardrobe is the garment of him who is naked; the shoes that you do not wear are the shoes of the one who is barefoot; the money that you keep locked away is the money of the poor; the acts of charity that you do not perform are so many injustices that you commit.

- Saint Basil the Great (329 - 279)
