The Place of my Soul:

Help me today, dear Lord, to concentrate on my soul. Help me to know where it is in me—and where it is going in the future. Allow me to find my soul and lift it up to you.

“Paying Taxes”:

In today’s Gospel, Jesus paid His taxes “readily.” As Christians we are called to contribute to our country’s welfare through taxes and to help nurture the values of unity, justice and human flourishing. But, if we also help people to love God, then all these values will become virtues.

To harbor no envy, no anger, no resentment against an offender is still not to have charity for him. It is possible, without any charity, to avoid rendering evil for evil. But to render, spontaneously, good for evil — such belongs to a perfect spiritual love.

- Saint Maximus the Confessor (580-662)

Christ, like a skillful physician, understands the weakness of men. He loves to teach the ignorant and the erring he turns again to his own true way. He is easily found by those who live by faith; and to those of pure eye and holy heart, who desire to knock at the door, he opens immediately. He does not disdain the barbarian, nor does he set the eunuch aside as no man. He does not hate the female on account of the woman’s act of disobedience in the beginning, nor does he reject the male on account of the man’s transgression. But he seeks all, and desires to save all, wishing to make all the children of God, and calling all the saints unto one perfect man.

- Hippolytus, Treatise on Christ and Antichrist
