Inherit the Earth:

Scripture says that the meek will inherit the earth. Such a promise strikes our ears as rather grandiose, like hyperbole or grand overstatement. It obviously does not mean the earth in which we live; it means the heavenly world. Our reward for meekness involves spiritual realms, blessings that will last forever.

'Hated' - Faith:

In today's Gospel, Jesus laments that if we follow His teachings, 'the world will hate us'. Jesus' teaches us to be humble and forgiving, unconditional in our love, selfless in our service. Such Gospel values are the opposites of the worldly values of pride, revenge, hatred, selfishness and the like.

In this life, conversion is a goal which is never fully attained: On the path which the disciple is called to follow in the footsteps of Jesus, conversion is a lifelong task.

- Pope John Paul II (January 22, 1999)
